THE SUPER VIKING IS A 4 PLACE LOW WING CROSS-COUNTRY TRAVELING AIRPLANE WITH A UNIQUE LINEAGE AND A VERY LOYAL FOLLOWING!
GIUSEPPE BELLANCA WAS A PROLIFIC AND ACCOMPLISHED AIRCRAFT DESIGNER WHOSE AIRPLANES WERE KNOWN FOR THEIR SPEED AND EFFICIENCY!
CHARLES LINDBERG’S FIRST CHOICE FOR HIS NON STOP SOLO ATLANTIC FLIGHT
WAS A BELLANCA WB, BUT BELLANCA WANTED TO SUPPLY HIS OWN CREW, SO
LINDBERG WENT TO RYAN INSTEAD!
GIUSEPPE DESIGNED MANY AIRPLANES THROUGH THE 1930’S AND AFTER WW2, HE
SETTLED ON A LOW WING MONOPLANE DESIGN, WHICH WAS PRODUCED AS THE
CRUISAIR AND CRUISEMASTER.
THIS AIRPLANE WAS A STEEL TUBING FUSELAGE WITH FABRIC COVERING AND WOOD CONSTRUCTION MAIN WINGS .
THIS DESIGN PRODUCED A VERY FAST AIRPLANE FOR IT’S DAY, AND THE BELLANCA
CORPORATION, THROUGH A VARIETY OF OWNERS, CONTINUED TO UPDATE AND
IMPROVE THE AIRPLANE FOR THE NEXT 50 YEARS!
IN 1967, THE AIRPLANE TOOK ON IT’S FINAL BASIC SHAPE, WITH THE
INTRODUCTION OF THE 17-30 VIKING, WITH A 300 H.P. (285 H.P. CONTINUOUS)
CONTINENTAL IO-520 ENGINE.
THE VIKING ALSO SAW THE INTRODUCTION OF A “LIKETIME” FIBERGLASS COVERING OVER THE WOOD WINGS FOR DURABILITY.
UPDATED AGAIN, TO THE 17-30A SUPER VIKING IN 1970, WITH ERGONOMIC AND
SYSTEM UPGRADES, THIS AIRPLANE CONTINUALLY EVOLVED WITH THE TIMES IN
ORDER TO PROVIDE AN AIRPLANE THAT WAS FAST, STABLE IN TURBULANCE, AND
MORE RESPONSIVE TO PILOT INPUTS THAN SIMILAR AIRCRAFT
FROM PIPER, CESSNA AND BEECHCRAFT!
THE SUPER VIKING HAS BEEN CALLED THE “POOR MAN’S P-51” AND AS A SERIAL
SUPER VIKING OWNER MYSELF OVER THE YEARS, I AGREE, NO AIRPLANE OF
SIMILAR SIZE AND MISSION HANDLES AS NICELY AS A SUPER VIKING!
WHEN THE SUPER VIKING PRODUCTION STOPPED IN 1980 WITH THE HIGH INTEREST RATE CRUSH, IT SEEMED LIKE THE END OF AN ERA.
BUT WITH A LOYAL FOLLOWING INTERESTED IN NEW AIRPLANES, A NEW OWNER WHO
WAS AN EXPERIENCED BUSINESS OWNER AND WITH THE ADDED BUSINESS MODEL OF
REFURBISHING OLDER MODELS TO NEWER SPECS, THE FACTORY RESTARTED IN 1984,
AND PRODUCED A FEW AIRPLANES EACH YEAR, HANDBUILT
BY EXPERIENCED CRAFTSMAN, AND AS MORE OF A BESPOKE PRODUCTION, RATHER
THAN HIGH VOLUME MASS PRODUCTION!
ALAS, THE OWNER WAS AGING AND COULD NOT KEEP UP WITH THE AIRPLANE
COMPANY AND HIS OTHER INTERESTS, SO THE FACTORY CLOSED AGAIN IN 1998.
THIS AIRCRAFT IS ONE OF THE LAST 5 SUPER VIKINGS PRODUCED!!
IN AN EFFORT TO BOOST PERFORMANCE EVEN FURTHER, IN THE MID 1990’S THE
AIRCRAFT COULD BE FACTORY ORDERED WITH THE IO-550 CONTINENTAL ENGINE!
THE IO-550 PRODUCES 300 H.P. CONTINUOUS, AND THE EXTRA H.P. INCREASES THE CRUISE SPEED OF THE AIRPLANES SO EQUIPPED TO 210 MPH!
OF COURSE THESE AIRPLANES PRODUCED IN THE LATE 1990’S ARE VERY DELUX AND
FAR MORE MODERN, INSIDE AND EQUIPMENT WISE, AND MOST ARE 1 OWNER, LOW
TIME AIRPLANES!!!
THIS AIRCRAFT FOR INSTANCE, HAS ONLY 724 HOURS TOTAL TIME SINCE NEW!!
WITH A MODERN MEDIUM GREY LEATHER INTERIOR INCLUDING WELL BOLSTERED

THE DASH LAYOUT IS PILOT FRIENDLY AND VERY WELL LAID OUT!
THIS AIRCRAFT INCLUDES THE STEC 60-2 AUTOPILOT SYSTEM, WHICH IS LIGHT
YEARS AHEAD OF THE CENTURY IIB THAT WAS FACTORY INSTALLED IN MOST OF THE
BELLANCA SUPER VIKINGS IN THE 1970’S!
THE 60-2 IS A RATE BASED SYSTEM THAT PROVIDES ALTITUDE HOLD, GLIDESLOPE
COUPLING, VERTICAL SPEED CONTROL, WING LEVELING, RADIO OR GPS TRACKING
AND HAS BOTH AUTOMATIC AND MANUAL PITCH TRIM!
VERY SOPHISTICATED SYSTEM, AND COMPLETE WITH SERVOS, RATE GYRO AND COMPUTORS INSTALLED!
AS YOU CAN SEE, THE OTHER AVIONICS WHICH HAD BEEN INSTALLED IN THIS
AIRPLANE WERE REMOVED AFTER THIS INCIDENT AND ARE NOT INCLUDED HERE.

NOTICE THE SQUARED OFF “HEAVY” RAM’S HORN CONTROL YOKES!!
THIS VERY PRETTY YELLOW WITH GREY ACCENTS AIRPLANE SUFFERED DAMAGE AFTER
THE OWNER/PILOT GOT INVOLVED IN MAINTENANCE (NO MENTION OF HIM BEING AN
A&P)!
AFTER REPLACING THE FUEL HOSES WITH NEW, HE FORGOT TO WRENCH TIGHTEN THE
LINE TO THE FLOW DIVIDER ON THE TOP OF THE ENGINE, AND ON THE FIRST
FLIGHT, IT LOOSENED AND THE ENGINE STARVED OF FUEL AND QUIT.
HE SET THE AIRPLANE DOWN ON A ROADWAY BUT WENT OFF THE SIDE, WHERE THE
GEAR RETRACTED BACKWARD AND THE AIRPLANE SLID ON IT’S BELLY!
THE SHAPE OF THE BELLANCA BELLY IS NOT FORMED BY THE STEEL MAIN FUSELAGE
TUBING, JUST BY WOODEN FORMERS THAT HOLD THE FABRIC IN SHAPE.
AS YOU CAN SEE, THE FORMERS ARE DAMAGED AND THE FABRIC IS RIPPED, BUT
THE ACTUAL STEEL TUBING IS NOT SCRAPED AND IS NOT LIKELY DAMAGED!
THE LEFT WING PLYWOOD OVER THE TOP HAS BEEN PUSHED OUT, LIKELY DUE TO
THE FORCE OF THE GEAR RETRACTING SO QUICKLY AND UNDER STRESS, BUT THE
REST OF THE WING STRUCTURE APPEARS UNDAMAGED, AND SO OF COURSE THIS WING
CAN BE REPAIRED WITH A SCARF PATCH IN THE TOP
SKIN!
THE RIGHT MAIN WHEEL AND FORK BROK OFF AND PUSHED UP ON THE TRAILING
EDGE OF THE WING SKIN, AFT OF THE REAR SPAR AND DAMAGED THE WING MORE
HEAVILY IN THIS AREA.
THERE ARE A FEW COMPANIES THAT REPAIR THE BELLANCA WING, BUT AN
ALTERNATIVE IS A REPLACEMENT WITH A WING FROM A LATE 1970’S SUPER
VIKING, WHICH USES THE SAME STRUCTURE.
THESE WINGS ARE AVAILABLE, FROM US OR OTHERS, IF REPAIR IS LESS CONVENIENT FOR YOU!

BOTH FLAPS HAVE SOME DAMAGE (AVAILABLE USED FOR REPLACEMENTIF DESIRED), WHILE BOTH AILERONS ARE UNDAMAGED!
ALL OF THE TAIL FEATHERS ARE UNDAMAGED!
THE 3 BLADE MCCAULEY PROP WAS BENT ON ALL 3 TIPS AND WAS DISCARDED, UNFORTUNATELY.
THE ENGINE AND ACCESSORIES HAVE NO DAMAGE, BUT WAS SUBJECTED TO A NO POWER PROP STRIKE.
