1996 KITFOX SERIES 5 VIXEN, 618 SNEW, VERY LIGHT DAMAGE, EASY REPAIR, NICE!
SINCE IT’S INTRODUCTION IN THE 1980’S, THE KITFOX SERIES HAS BEEN A VERY POPULAR SMALL LIGHTWEIGHT 2 PLACE SIDE-BY-SIDE HOMEBUILT, WITH A LOYAL FOLLOWING.
IMPROVEMENTS TO THE ORIGINAL DESIGN WERE INCREMENTAL, AND THE COMPANY IS PRODUCING THE CURRENT VERSION OF THE ORIGINAL, THE SERIES 4. MOST OF THE ORIGINAL SERIES 1-4 USE SMALL ENGINES OF VARIOUS TYPES, INCLUDING 64 HP-80 H.P. ROTAX, AUTO CONVERSION S, ETC.
REALIZING THAT THERE WAS A MARKET FOR A SLIGHTLY LARGER VERSION OF THE AIRPLANE (ORIGINALS ARE BOTH SHOULDER AND HEADROOM LIMITED), AND DESIGNED TO USE OFF THE SHELF LYCOMING AND CONTINENTAL ENGINES, IN 1994 THE SERIES 5 WAS ANNOUNCED!
WITH A LARGER CABIN, MORE SHOULDER ROOM THAN A BONANZA, AND THE OPTION OF A TAILWHEEL OR A NOSEWHEEL VERSION, THE SERIES 5 NOW OUTSELLS THE SERIES IV BY A MARGIN OF 4/1!
THIS SERIES 5 IS THE TRICYCLE GEARED “VIKEN” MODEL AND WAS DESIGNED TO USE 100 H.P. ROTAX, OR 100-125 H.P CONTINENTAL OR LYCOMING POWERPLANTS.
THIS AIRPLANE WAS BUILT TO ACCEPT THE CONTINENTAL FUEL INJECTED IO-240 125 H.P. ENGINE.
THE SERIES 5, LIKE ALL OF THE KITFOX MODELS, IS A STICK CONTROLLED, 2 SEAT SIDE BY SIDE AIRPLANE, BUT ONE LOOK AT THE CLEAN LARGE, MODERN DASH LAYOUT AND YOU CAN SEE THAT THEY WERE AIMING FOR A “LESS HOMEBUILT, MORE CERTIFIED” PRESENTATION!
THIS AIRCRAFT WAS COMPLETED IN 1996 AFTER A 1200 HOUR ASSEMBLY TIME.
LOGBOOKS ARE COMPLETE FROM COMPLETION OF THE AIRCRAFT TO THE LAST CONDITION INSPECTION IN 2022.
UNFORTUNATELY DURING A FLIGHT IN LATE 2022, THE AIRCRAFT RAN OUT OF FUEL (OR HAD A FUEL DELIVERY PROBLEM) AND WAS FORCED TO LAND OFF AIRPORT!
ALTHOUGH THE KITFOX LINE IS KNOW AS A GOOD SHORT/SOFT FIELD AIRPLANE, IT IS MADE FOR PREPARED RUNWAYS, NOT A RANDOM FIELD!
UNFORTUNATELY, THE NOSEGEAR TUBE BENT BACK AND THE NOSEWHEEL AND FORK BROKE OFF, BUT THE AIRPLANE DID NOT FLIP OVER!!
DAMAGE WAS SUSTAINED TO THE NOSEGEAR TUBE, THE NOSEGEAR MOUNT ON THE BOTTOM OF THE TUBULAR ENGINE MOUNT, AND THERE IS A SMAL HOLE PUNCTURED IN THE FIREWALL (BUT THE FIREWALL STRUTURE IS OVERALL STRAIGH, NOT BENT UP)!
THE LOWER FIBERGLASS COWLING IS CRACKED UP AND THE NOSEGEAR TUNNEL WAS DEFORMED BY THE GEAR TUBE, (VISIBLE INSIDE BY THE PILOT’S FOOTWELL SIDE).
THE RIGHT FIBERGLASS WINGTIP IS CRACKED AND BROKEN, AND THE IMPACT TO THIS WING TRANSMITTED TO THE CARRY-THROUGH TUBE IN THE OVERHEAD COCKPIT, WHICH IS BENT.
THE OVERALL STRUCTURE OF THE RIGHT WING LOOKS STRAIGHT, AS DOES THE OVERALL FUSELAGE STRUCTURE!
THE LEFT WING HAS A DENTED SECTION LESS THAN 10” WIDE ON THE ALUMINUM LEADING EDGE RE-ENFORCEMENT, BUT THE OVERALL STRUCTURE AND SPARS LOOK GOOD!
WINGTIP WHELEN STROBE/NAV/TAILLIGHTS AND POWER SUPPLIES ARE UNDAMAGED!
THE RUDDER HAS SAGGING FABRIC AT THE BOTTOM EDGE, SO STRUCTURE IS LIKELY DAMAGED THERE ONLY.
THE LIFT STRUTS, HORIZONTAL AND ELEVATORS AND FLAPERONS DO NOT SHOW ANY DAMAGE.
THE MAIN GEAR HOOP, WITH CLEVELAND WHEELS AND BRAKES APPEARS UNDAMAGED.
INSIDE, THE DASH HAS AIRSPEED, VSI, MANIFOLD PRESSURE, EGT/CHT GUAGE, VAC GUAGE, TACH, HOBBS, AND A FULL COMPLIMENT OF 2 ¼” ENGINE GUAGES INSTALLED!
