MOONEYS ARE FAST! FROM THE FIRST MODEL, AN M20 OF ANY ENGINE SIZE IS FASTER THAN ANY OTHER PRODUCTION AIRPLANE WITH THE SAME HORSEPOWER!

IT’S A GOOD THING TOO, BECAUSE THE ERGONOMICS AND DETAILS OF THE MOONEY M20, M20A, M20B AND EARLY M20C MOONEY WERE REALLY SORT OF A MESS!!

WITH A HORRIBLE DASH LAYOUT, CLAUSTROPHOBIC (AND DRAGGY) WINDSHIELD ANGLE, LABOR INTENSIVE COWLING REMOVAL, DRAGGY COWLING OPENING, RIDICULOUS INSTRUMENT MOUNTING, WOOD WINGS, ETC., IT’S A WONDER THEY COULD SELL THEM!! THEY ONLY GOT AWAY WITH IT BECAUSE THEY WERE FAST FOR THE HORSEPOWER, BUT THOSE PATIENT WITH THE FACTORY WERE REWARDED WITH IMPROVEMENTS AS THE YEARS WENT ON.

LIKE THE OTHER GENERAL AVIATION MANUFACTURERS, MOONEY EVENTUALLY FIGURED OUT AN ERGONOMIC INSTRUMENT LAYOUT (DUBBED THE “SIX-PACK”), AND THIS 1968 AIRCRAFT HAS THE GOOD LAYOUT.

BY THE MOONEY 1968 MODEL YEAR, LIKE THIS ONE, ALMOST ALL THE ISSUES ASSOCIATED WITH THE EARLY AIRPLANES HAD BEEN FIXED! THIS AIRPLANE HAS A FRESHLY REFINED FOR 1968 WING DESIGN (ALUMINUM, OF COURSE), AN EASY TO REMOVE COWLING WITH QUICK TURN FASTENERS AND PLENTY OF ROOM TO INSTALL REAL FLIGHT INSTRUMENTS.

UNFORTUNATELY, THE 68 STILL HAS THE STUPID, ALMOST FLAT, TOTALLY DRAGGY WINDSHIELD ANGLE, WHICH IS ALSO CLAUSTROPHOBIC FROM THE FRONT SEATS.

THE M20C ALWAYS HAD THIS WINDSHIELD, RIGHT UP UNTIL THE LAST PRODUCTION IN 1976.

AS MANY FAMILIAR WITH MOONEY HISTORY KNOW, IT TOOK ROY LOPRESTI AND HIS ENGINEERS UNTIL 1977 TO ANGLE THE WINDSHIELD PROPERLY, WHICH REDUCES CABIN NOISE, INCREASES CRUISE SPEED AND GIVES THE FRONT SEATERS AN EXCELLENT VISTA.

THIS AIRPLANE HAS BEEN UPGRADED TO THE 201 WINDSHIELD!!

IT LOOKS NEWER AND FASTER EVEN STANDING STILL, DON’T YOU THINK?

ALTHOUGH THIS AIRPLANE DOESN’T HAVE THE FULL 201 COWLING, WHICH WAS THE OTHER ADVANCE FROM ROY, IT DOES HAVE A FIBERGLASS COWL CLOSURE INSERT, WHICH REDUCES PARASITIC DRAG AND INCREASES COOLING EFFICIENCY!

IF YOU DON’T SEE ANYTHING WRONG WITH THIS AIRPLANE AT FIRST GLANCE OF THE PICTURES, IT IS UNDERSTANDABLE. THE LONGTIME OWNER-PILOT OF THIS AIRPLANE HAD DIFFICULTY GETTING THE GEAR TO FULLY LOCK DOWN, SO HE DECIDED (RIGHTLY), THAT A PLANNED GEAR UP IS FAR SAFER THAN A POSSIBLE GEAR COLLAPSE ON ROLL-OUT.

IF YOU LOOK CLOSELY, YOU WILL SEE THAT EACH NOSE GEAR DOOR HAS SOME SCRAPING ON IT, BUT THEY ARE NOT DESTROYED.

LIKEWISE, 3 OF THE BELLY SKINS, AFT OF THE FIREWALL ARE SCRAPED, AND ONE OF THE BELLY RIBS IS ALSO SCRAPED. NEITHER OF THESE ISSUES IS A VERY BIG DEAL IN A MOONEY, AS THE BELLY SKINS IN QUESTION SIMPLY SCREW ON !! MEANT TO BE EASILY REMOVABLE FOR BELLY INSPECTION, THEY ARE ALSO EASY TO REPLACE WHEN DAMAGED !!

THE RIB ISN’T A BIG DEAL EITHER, AS THE RIBS IN THIS AREA ARE UNDER THE WING ONLY, NOT ALL THE WAY AROUND THE FUSELAGE, SO THIS WILL BE AN INEXPENSIVE PART TO BUY AND AN EASY PART TO REPLACE.

THE BOARDING STEP IS SCRAPED ON THE BOTTOM, AND A COUPLE OF BELLY  MOUNTED ANTENNAS ARE WORN DOWN. THAT’S IT FOR AIRFRAME DAMAGE !!

THAT’S RIGHT, NO WING DAMAGE !! NOT EVEN THE INBOARD FLAP HANGERS ARE SCRAPED, AS THE STEP AND ANTENNAS ACTED AS SLEDS!!

NO FLAP OR AILERON DAMAGE!

NO OTHER FUSELAGE DAMAGE!! THE FIREWALL LOOKS GOOD.

 EVEN THE LOWER COWLING ISN’T SCRAPED!!

THE TAILCONE AND TAIL FEATHERS ARE UNDAMAGED.

THE DOOR SHUTS WELL AND ALL OF THE GLASS IS UNDAMAGED.

THE ROTATING BEACON LOCATED ON THE AFT BELLY IS UNDAMAGED.

THE 0-360 ENGINE AND PROPELLOR WERE DAMAGED, AS YOU MIGHT ASSUME, AND HAVE BEEN REMOVED. THEY ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THIS AUCTION.

REMOVAL WAS PROFESSIONAL, WITH CABLES, LINES AND ELECTRICAL WIRES REMAINING UNCUT, AND THE ENGINE MOUNT ITSELF IS UNDAMAGED AND INSTALLED.

THE ONLY CONTROL MISSING IS THE PROP CONTROL CABLE. THE FORMER OWNER NEEDED ONE FOR THE AIRPLANE HE BOUGHT AFTER THIS ONE, SO WE LET HIM REMOVE IT FROM HIS OLD PLANE.

AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THE DASH PHOTO, THE AVIONICS PANEL UNITS HAVE BEEN REMOVED AND ARE NOT INCLUDED, BUT YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO SEE THAT THE COMM, RNAV AND TRANSPONDER TRAYS ARE STILL INCLUDED AND WIRED. ALL OF THE ENGINE INSTRUMENTATION IS INSTALLED AND INCLUDED, AS ARE MOST OF THE NORMAL FLIGHT INSTRUMENTS.

THE GREY SEATS WITH GREY AND RED SIDE PANELS PRESENT WELL, AND NOTICE THE EXTENDED AREA IN THE BAGGAGE COMPARTMENT, ANOTHER IMPROVEMENT FROM THE EARLIER M20C’S.

THIS AIRPLANE IS A PRETTY GOOD 20 FOOTER, WITH GOOD COLORS IN A PLEASING SCHEME, BUT AS YOU GET UP TO IT, YOU SEE THAT IT HAS BEEN RUBBED AND POLISHED TOO MUCH, AND THE PAINT IS THIN IN SPOTS, AND VIRTUALLY GONE IN OTHERS. I AM GOING TO RECOMMEND YOU PLAN A PAINT JOB AFTER THE REPAIR, UNLESS YOU DON’T CARE ABOUT APPEARANCES. CORROSION DOESN'T APPEAR TO BE A PROBLEM, AND I WOULD HAVE SEEN IT ON THE EXTERIOR, BECAUSE IT WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN COVERED BY MUCH PAINT!

THE ORIGINAL GEAR ISSUE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THAT THE RIGHT MAIN DIDN’T FULLY EXTEND, AND IS SUPPOSE THIS IS BPOSSIBLE BECAUSE THE FAR OUTBOARD FLAP HANGER IS SLIGHTLY SCRAPED, BUT THERE IS NO WING SCRAPING AND  IT IS SITTING UP FINE NOW, SO IF THERE IS A PROBLEM, IT  NOT OBVIOUS.
