Gentleman, I’m proud to offer today a genuine relic from the bitter air war over Europe in 1945. This is going to be a long listing but I hope you will find it well worth to read the whole thing.

We are now looking at a some P&W ignition parts which saw actual combat use by the 15th Air Force, 454 Bomber Group.

Reads DP 52369M 1890627

Ignition leads are unfortunately cut. They are stamped PAI-198/508-2058619. I think the cables also read Autolite but I can’t really make it out.

Most B-24’s used either the R-1830-43, 43A, 65 or 65A units.

The 43/65 units were usually fitted with Bendix-Scintilla magnetos.

Scintilla Magneto Co.

Fits two bank 14 cylinder radial P&W R 1830 Twin Wasp

Pardon my technical English as well as my limited knowledge of magnetos but here is what I can identify:

Booster terminal block is excellent considering age

Rotor is very good

Rotating magnet is present

Distributor gears are good

Breaker cam is present

Shaft is not the best as thread is damaged.

All in all, a bonanza of usable genuine parts in addition to historic value.

Only surface rust is preset which could be cleaned off.

This lot together with a few outer bits and pieces were recovered in the town of Gyulaj in Hungary.

Exact identification of the aircraft is beyond my abilities, but my research shows that two B-24 Liberators landed / crashed near that village in March 1945. They were the following:

44-49264

On 23. March 1945 the 484th BG. Headed out to raid the Nibelungenwerke, one of the largest German tank production facilities at St. Valentine, Austria.

#44-49264 (MACR 13279) named Pregnant Duck of 454. BG. 739. Sq. left formation over the target and started going down.  Presumably it suffered AA damage over the target. It luckily avoided encounter with fighters and safely landed in an open agricultural field near the village of Kurd in Tolna county, Hungary.

The crew eventually made it back through Odessa, Russia or Bucharest, Rumania.

Pilot - Capt. Warren J. Williamson

Crew:

Purkiss, Robert T., 2nd Lt, 0-715323

Pullerton, William A., 1st Lt, 0-723343

Bierworth, Clarence W., 1st Lt, 0-2056685

Stone, Solomon, 2nd Lt, 0-2063498

Cohen, Philip H., F/O, T-134805

Sholl, Alvin W., T/Sgt, 36661333

Simmons, Edlane, T/Sgt, 15041688

De Stafney, Louis F., S/Sgt, 12133904

Wixson, George W., S/Sgt, 12198087

Bothe, Walter W., S/Sgt, 38555758

The story of the 2nd possible B-24 is even more interesting.

44-49936

On 01. March 1945. the 484th BG. Headed out to raid the Mosebierbaum oil refinery near the Austrian capital of Vienna.

#44-49936 B-24 Liberator was hit by AA fire and sustained serious damage. Lieutenant William K. Sutton left the formation. The lone aircraft was easy target for the RHAF Puma squadron guarding the Hungarian airspace. According to US records a Focke-Wulf 190 attacked the B-24, whereas Hungarian records show that Messerschmitt Me-109s of the 101 "Puma" squadron led by Lieutenant Colonel Máthé shot down the damaged plane.

Prior to landing the crew parachuted out while Captain Sutton, William K. belly landed in a field near the village of Kurd.

(That name has nothing to do with the Kurds or the Kurdish people.)

The crew was captured by Hungarian forces but all members survived.

44-49936 was the last B-24 which fell at the guns of the Hungarian 101st Fighter Squadron "Puma" fighters (Bf 109G).

Am I asking too much?

It depends on how you look at it. Your purchase will finance my future research and will reimburse some of the rather significant expenses incurred already while trying to save relics of the 1944-1945 air war over Hungary.

One can obtain these relics from two sources:

Fellow collectors or antiques dealers – a good but usually expensive source.

Field hunting – the best source theoretically but terribly time consuming and involves countless miles of driving and endless asking around.

Relics held by fellow collectors are in good hands.

However, scrap metal collecting and salvaging in or around poor villages causes immense loss and damage to our cultural and historical heritage. Scrap metal, particularly aluminum and anything containing copper or brass is at the greatest danger.

Collection and recycling of scrap metal had been centrally organized by the Communist Party in the 1950’s as the industry needed raw material. In a few short years all major wrecks were collected and molten down. Only those parts and components survived which were either put to use by civilians or were put away for whatever reason.

There was general poverty in Europe after the war, particularly in countries occupied by the Soviets. Supplies and hardware in general was scarce. Civilians salvaged pretty much everything they thought could be useful from derelict wrecks.

It was common practice to use aircraft skin for patching leaky roofs or even to replace broken window glass. Military wheels or rollers instantly became cart or barrow wheels and steel helmets were commonly used as dog dishes.

Today you really have to talk to old folks and take a peek in back yards and barns to find anything at all. Unfortunately, most of the times all you get is interesting stories or vague directions that really don’t take you anywhere.

Unfortunately those who try to save some relics are racing against scrap metal collectors who became active in recent years again.

Due to adverse economic and political changes in recent years there are many people today who really have nothing else to do other than walking around and picking up everything that would yield a dollar at the local scrap depot.

Much is being lost as you are reading this.

I’m trying to save whatever I can.

Have a look at my other B-24 relics coming from the same aircraft.
